The Olympics or as Landon refers to them the Lips. Nothing brings out love for Canada like us kicking some butt. 14 Gold medals is pretty impressive. The most ever won at a winter Olympics. We won the most medals we have ever won at a winter Olympics (though we were 3rd this time for overall this Olympic). Last night we were watching the closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and I loved it. It was so fun to watch. One of the highlights was the opening - they totally poked fun of the malfunctioning arm in the cauldron that happened in the opening ceremonies. Really what I got overall from the ceremony was "Hello, we are Canadian and we are not afraid to mock ourselves". Did you see BC premier? He was hilarious, he totally was into everything, singing the anthem, waving his red mittens and wearing his moose antlers (that they handed to everyone in the crowd), he totally stood out among the other dignitaries because he looked like he was actually having fun. It was so nice to watch a cultural celebration that was just fun. It had giant mounties, flying moose, beavers and Hockey players. On the note of hockey - church was hilarious yesterday as our 1 pm meeting coincided with the Gold medal game between U.S. and Canada. As soon as church was over people were taking about the game - Cause WE WON! I felt a little sorry for those who taped it and had the outcome ruined for them. It has been a great Olympics to watch my favorites were the Canadian Women's 2-person bobsled where we won gold and silver and the women's figure skating, where we got bronze. I just wanted to cry during the figure skaters Joannie Rochette's performance. It was just so sad as her Mother died 2 days before her first performance unexpectedly. (story) We were watching the free skate and she was in the bronze medal position with only 1 skater left, I had never wanted someone to suck so bad. Unfortunately the U.S. skater gave a wonderful performance - I felt bad for wanted her to fall but felt "she's only 16, she can win a medal next time". Lucky for us Canadian her combined score of both nights fell short of stealing a medal away. I also loved the speech by John Furlong during the closing ceremony. My highlights include:
"I believe we Canadians tonight are stronger, more united, more in love with our country and more connected with each other than ever before. These Olympic Games have lifted us up. If the Canada that came together on Opening night was a little mysterious to some it no longer is.
Now you know us….eh?"
and
"To the people of Georgia, we are so sad and so sorry for your loss. Your unimaginable grief is shared by every Canadian and all those who have gathered here. May the legacy of your favourite son Nodar KUMARITASHVILI (GEO) never be forgotten and serve to inspire youth everywhere to be champions in life." - This is one of the saddest part of the Olympics. The Georgian athlete who died days before the games started in a practice run. My highlight of the opening ceremony was the standing ovation his country got when they walked in and the minute of silence. I hope his family knows that we as a world mourned with them and felt their loss and were deeply sorry.
Now that the Olympics are over I regret not getting red mittens and wonder "Rebecca where is your Olympic post? You actually went"
